— FAQ
Q: What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood flooring?
A: Solid Hardwood Flooring is nailed down on top of plywood. Engineered can be floated or glued to an underlayment.
Q: Where would I use solid versus engineered?
A: Solid Hardwood Flooring is used in homes and other commercial applications where the subfloor is plywood. Engineered flooring is used in all applications specifically ideal for basements, apartments, condominiums and all areas where there is a concrete subfloor.
Q: What is the difference between unfinished and prefinished hardwood flooring?
A: All factory prefinished solid hardwood flooring is micro-beveled whereas unfinished flooring is square edged leaving no gap between strips of flooring. Another key difference is that factory prefinished comes ready to install whereas unfinished flooring needs to be sanded and finished on site. The durability of the factory prefinished is superior to that of an on site finish.
Q: How can I match my flooring to my staircase?
A: If you use the same wood for both the staircase and the flooring they can be stained to match.
Q: What is the difference between domestic and exotic species of wood?
A: The main differences other than physical geography of origins are the length and hardness of the wood. On average exotic hardwood flooring will be both longer and harder than domestic species.
Q: What are the advantages of hardwood, laminate, bamboo flooring?
A: Hardwood flooring is the most durable and has the longest average life span of the three products. Hardwood flooring is real wood and adds the most value to property. Laminate is the most cost efficient flooring surfaces out of the three while bamboo is the most environmentally friendly, repels water damage very well, and is a very sustainable product.
